In an attempt to encourage the use of bicycles, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has introduced a provision of permanent bicycle stands at the parking lots of the Metro stations. These permanent bicycle stands have the capacity for parking of 30-40 bicycles and will be provided with a locking mechanism for the safety of bicycles.
Starting earlier this month, the stands have been installed at 18 parking lots across different stations in the Delhi Metro network. The stations that have already got the permanent stands are Seelampur, Shahdara, Welcome, Rithala and Tis Hazari on the Red Line; Saket, Arjangarh, Chattarpur, on the Yellow Line; Dwarka Mor, Dwarka, Dwarka Sector 21 on the Blue Line. On the Green Line, the facility can be availed at Mundka, Nangloi, Peergarhi. The bicycle stands are also available at the parking lots of Tughlakabad, Badarpur, Sarita Vihar Metro stations on Violet Line and Okhla Bird Sanctuary station on Magenta Line.
The facility will be extended to other Metro stations in a phased manner, DMRC officials said. By the end of this month, bicycle stands will also be available at the parking lot of Nawada, Uttam Nagar East and Vishwavidyalaya Metro stations.
The DMRC, in association with private operators, is already operating 20 bicycle-sharing service stands at 19 stations. It has identified 13 more stations where these services would be extended.
